Friday, July 26th, 2019 – We have just learned that one of our suppliers, Mountain Rose Herbs (MRH), has issued a voluntary recall for its whole fennel seed product. MRH is taking this voluntary and precautionary measure due to the possibility that the seeds it sold us may be contaminated with salmonella.

Mountain Rose Herbs (MRH) informed us that the lot of affected fennel seeds originally tested negative for salmonella before being offered for sale, but their subsequent routine re-testing revealed the presence of salmonella in some samples of the lot. Since MRH began sales of the affected seeds several weeks ago, MRH states that there have been no reported illnesses thus far.

Once we were contacted by MRH, we immediately conducted a full audit and traced MRH-sourced fennel seeds to several of our pork sausage products with a freeze by date between July 6 and August 24, 2019. However, since we grind all of our pork sausages on the same grinder, we decided to dispose of all pork sausages with a freeze by date during that time.

Customer safety is our number one priority. While any traces of salmonella (if indeed contained in any of the fennel seeds used by us) would very likely be killed when the pork sausages are thoroughly cooked, salmonella is a dangerous food-borne pathogen whose symptoms include diarrhea, fever, chills and abdominal pain and we do not want to take any chances.

Thus, we are requesting that customers dispose of any pork sausage products with a freeze by date between July 6 and August 24, 2019. A photo of a sample label is shown below, you can find the freeze by date at the top of the label, above the logo. Please come visit our retail window (located at 3607 Main Street, Stone Ridge, NY 12484) between 11 am and 6 pm daily so we can replace your items with new product. For any immediate questions or concerns, you can reach us at, or by phone at (845) 626-4444.

Best Regards,
The Applestone Team
